Abstract

The New Face of the Wadowice Cultural Centre – The History, Significance, and Future of the Investment

The building that now houses the Wadowice Cultural Center was originally constructed at the end of the 19th century as one of the first “Sokół” gymnasiums in Poland, designed by Teofil Talowski. It served sports, cultural, and educational purposes, becoming an important hub of social life in Wadowice. During the interwar period and after World War II, the building underwent several renovations but gradually fell into disrepair. In the 1950s, it was rebuilt as a cultural center, losing much of its historical character. By the early 21st century, the building required near-complete reconstruction, as previous modernization projects proved insufficient.

In 2025, an architectural competition was announced for a new WCK headquarters. Forty-nine studios participated, and the winning design by Kozień Architekci was praised for harmoniously combining the historic character of the former Sokół gymnasium with modern design and functionality. The project includes multifunctional halls, modern technical facilities, educational and artistic spaces, as well as exhibition areas.

This new investment is strategically important for Wadowice, both culturally and socially. It is intended to be an open, inclusive space that brings together different community groups, continuing the tradition of the historic Sokół gymnasium in a contemporary form.
