Abstract
Wadowice in the Acts of the Imperial-Royal Starost in Biała – Technical Shortcomings of the Middle School Building in Wadowice.
The original middle school in Wadowice, the site of which is now occupied by the Marcin Wadowita General High School No 1, has a long, well documented and well chronicled history. This article is another example of piecing this history together.
The article isn’t as much about the functioning of the school per se, as it is about the history of the building – specifically the problems that faced Principal Seweryn Artz in the late 1880’s and early 1890’s. These problems mostly concerned the abnormal humidity that fell on the building, degrading its quality.
This article is the third part of a series titled: „Wadowice in the Acts of the Imperial-Royal Starost in Biała”, which was published in the „Wadoviana” periodical. The sources materials for this series of articles are the files stored in the Katowice State Archives Branch in Bielsko Biała Archiwum Państwowym w Katowicach Oddział w Bielsku-Białej (Group No. 13/689 County Starost in Biała Krakowska). This group’s files, produced during the second half of the 19th century, contain information regarding the history of Wadowice and adjacent areas. It is all the more surprising and unclear due to Wadowice not being a part of Biała County. However, the regulations at the time provided for the existence of a construction department within the Biała Starost, which also covered the area of Wadowice County. And that was the reason why that county appeared in the file materials left by the Imperial-Royal Starost in Biała.
