Abstract

Włodzimierz Piotrowski – Physician, Social Activist, and Art Enthusiast

Włodzimierz Piotrowski (1920–1994) was born in Tarnów, but he spent his entire adult life in Wadowice. His father, Jan Piotrowski, was a judge and was murdered in Auschwitz, while his mother, Janina, worked as a clerk after the war. Włodzimierz attended high school in Wadowice, where he was in the same class as Karol Wojtyła, and later studied at the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Cadet School. He fought in the defense of Warsaw and served in the ranks of the Home Army. After the war, he completed medical studies in Lublin and worked as a physician in Wadowice. He was passionate about folk art, collecting sculptures and naïve paintings, and supported self-taught artists. His collection included works by Antoni Kruczała, Michał Boczek, Jan and Maria Ficoń, Marian Bucała, and Jędrzej Wowra. Among his friends was the painter Franciszek Suknarowski, who created unique artworks and medals for him. After Włodzimierz Piotrowski’s death, his collection remained in the care of his daughters, and some of the pieces were transferred to the Municipal Museum in Wadowice.
